Our Story

Since its launch in 2020, Learn Auslan Online has received enrolments from a wide array of people including: emergency services staff, hospital staff, primary school teachers, childcare educators, university students, families with deaf children, workplaces with deaf colleagues, and individuals wanting to learn Auslan for fun and to learn a new skill.

We have grown from a single beginner course to now having several unique courses (with more to come) that cover signing for children at home and at school; to adults looking to learn a new skill whether that be for work, their community, or personal interest.

To date (August 2025) we have more than 7200 students enrolled online.

Your main tutor, Darren, has been teaching Auslan for over 20 years through in-person workplace and community courses as well as teaching Auslan as a LOTE in primary schools.

In the 4 years prior to COVID he was the Auslan LOTE teacher for three primary schools teaching Auslan to over 1000 Foundation to Grade 6 students each week. With this knowledge he has then created the Auslan LOTE Program which is used by primary schools Australia wide to teach Auslan to their students.

Darren's passion is teaching Auslan and outside of that he loves playing tennis, pickleball and lawn bowling, having friends over for dinner, playing board and card games with friends and family, reading and writing songs, walking his dog Shadow on the beach and going to the races to watch his six racehorses win races.
