In this video Darren gives you different strategies to communicate with a deaf person when you are wearing a mask and an Auslan interpreter is not there. There are ethical questions around the use of family members to translate between deaf person and you especially if the translator is a child. So, if possible try and use these strategies outlined by Darren. They are:

1) using Auslan as much as you can if an interpreter is not available

2) pen and paper (use key words only - not long sentences as English in many cases is their second language)

3) mobile phone - typing on it and back and forth (however this poses a virus transmission risk)

4) Live Transcribe App (you talk and show words and deaf responds by signing or pen / paper etc)
